International students should not use turbo tax or other such tax preparation software to file their taxes; they are designed for U.S. citizens and do not utilize the correct tax forms for non-residents. IRS Form 8843 (Statement for Exempt Individuals and Individuals with a Medical Condition)

All nonresident aliens must file the Form 8843 if they were:

  • present in the U.S. during the 2006 calendar year; and
  • in F-1, F-2, J-1, J-2, M-1, M-2, Q-1, or Q-2 visa status

Nonresident individuals who have received income and also those who have not received income are both required to file this form.

CINTAX: Complete International Tax Preparation Software

The Slutzker Center for International Services provides free access to CINTAX software for the preparation of U.S. federal income tax returns for international students who are:

  • Considered nonresident aliens for tax purposes; and

  • Current Syracuse University or SUNY ESF students or students who were participating in post-completion OPT during the 2007 calendar year

CINTAX is an online system; it does not file the tax return electronically.You must print, sign, and mail the tax forms generated by the software to the appropriate tax filing center.

Obtaining a CINTAX Password:
Each person who uses CINTAX must have a valid password. To request a password, please complete the online request form. Since there is a limited number of passwords, please be sure to provide all of the requested information and submit the online form in a timely manner. Within three business days you will receive a CINTAX password to log into the CINTAX website.

Information needed for completing CINTAX forms:

  • Visa/Immigration status information;
  • Passport;
  • Form I-20, if F status individual;
  • Form DS-2019, if J status individual;
  • Social Security or Individual Taxpayer Identification;
    Address Information (i.e., Current U.S. and Foreign Address);
  • U.S. Entry and Exit Dates for current and past visits to the U.S.;
  • Academic Institution or Host Sponsor Information (name/address/phone for Academic Advisor/Director –see below);
  • Forms W-2, 1042-S and/or 1099 (if you received any);
  • Scholarship/fellowship grant letter you may have received (if any); and
  • A copy of your 2006 federal income tax return (Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ), if you filed a federal income tax return last year.

Tax Payer Identification Number

Generally nonresident individuals may apply for either a Social Security Number (SSN) or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) for use on income tax related documents (not Form 8843).
