U.S. federal law requires that anyone who is employed must have a U.S. Social Security Number (SSN). This number is used to identify employees and to tax their salaries.
Please note that the SSA will not issue a SSN for the purpose of opening a bank account, or obtaining driver’s license, or telephone. SSN’s are issued only for the purpose of employment.
To be eligible for an SSN you must:
- Be a full-time student at SU.
- You must be employed or have promise of employment.
- Ask your campus employer to fill in the Certification of F-1 and J-1 Student On-Campus Employment for Social Security Number Application and print it on the department letterhead.
- Bring the form to the Slutzker Center to be signed.
- Apply for a SSN at the Social Security Administration office located on the 4th Floor of the Federal Building at 100 S. Clinton Street in downtown Syracuse. The office is open Monday through Friday, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm.
Don't Forget to bring your valid passport, Form I-94 (small white card in your passport), Certification of F-1 and J-1 Student On-Campus Employment for Social Security Number Application, Form I-20 (For F-1 students) or Form DS-2019 (For J-1 Students/scholars).
TIPS: Never go to the SSA on the first or the last day of the month because the waiting time on those particular days may be several hours.
- You will receive you SSN card in approximately two to eight weeks in your mail. Therefore, be sure to request a RECEIPT for your application. You might be required to present this receipt to Human Resource 121 Bowne Hall, immediately after obtaining it.
- After receiving your real SSN, make two copies of your card and take a copy of your card to each of the following offices:
~ Payroll Office, Skytop Office Building or 121 Bowne Hall
~ Slutzker Center for International Services, 310 Walnut Place
