How do I extend my I-20?
Sometimes students are not able to complete their studies prior to the expiration date on the I-20 or DS-2019. In this event, you may be eligible for an extension. This extension MUST be accomplished PRIOR to the expiration date on the I-20 or DS-2019.
  1. Complete the Application form for F-1 Extension of Program of Study

  2. Obtain photocopies of the following for self and dependents:
    • Passport expiration page, visa, and I-94
    • All I-20s
    • Financial support
    • Health insurance coverage including Medical Evacuation and Repatriation
    • For Graduate Students Only: If you are registered for GRD 998 in any semester and were not a TA, GA, or RA, then you must ALSO complete a Certificate of Full-time Status for each semester in which you were registered for GRD 998. Obtain this form from your department.

  3. Make an appointment with an International Student Advisor (ISA) at the Slutzker Center. This MUST be completed no later than two weeks prior to the completion date in item #5 of your current I-20. Please bring the originals and photocopies of your documents.

  4. Return to the Slutzker Center after receiving an e-mail from the ISA to sign your new I-20. Please Note that this process must be completed before the expiration date of your I-20.
If you currently work or anticipate working on:

SU Campus: Then your I-9 will be extended upon pick-up of your new I-20.
ESF Campus: You will need to go to Bray Hall with your new I-20 to extend your I-9.
