Graduate Readmission Instructions

In addition to being approved for readmission by your academic department, you may need additional approval if you have one or more of the following holds or issues:

  • Bursar hold
  • Medical hold (must have letter from Medical Doctor certifying ability to continue studies)
  • o Contact Ms. Kathy Shattuck at kcshattu@syr.edu in the Health Center for more information
  • Judicial hold (must have letter from Judicial Affairs certifying eligibility to continue studies)
  • Academic Probation or Suspension

Please follow the instructions below to apply for readmission and obtain a new immigration document.

Step 1 – Complete an application for readmission. Contact your Academic Department by letter or email and identify their procedure for requesting readmission. Most departments will use a general Petition form for readmission. This is a three part (carbonized) form.

If your Petition is approved by an administrator, then it will be sent to the Registrar’s office. The registrar will enter your readmission into the University’s computer system.

Step 2 – When you are notified of your readmission, please send an e-mail to lescis@syr.edu with a subject, “Readmission”.

Step 3 – If you have been out of the U.S. for more than five months, the Slutzker Center will request from you certification of your financial support and a photocopy of your passport. You can fax your financial support to 315-443-3091 or e-mail it to your Slutzker Center advisor. You must study in the United States for one academic year again to be eligible for Practical Training (Curricular Practical Training and Optional Practical Training). If you have been out of the U.S. for less than five months, you may use your current I-20 as long as it has a valid travel signature. A Slutzker Center Advisor will e-mail you to make sure that you have all the necessary documents to return to the U.S.

Step 4 – After receipt of financial support information, the Slutzker Center will issue and send to you a new I-20. You may wish to have this sent via express mail. In that case, provide the following credit card information:

o Name of card

o Number on card

o Exact spelling of name of person holding card

o Date of expiration of card

Step 5 – You will need to apply for an F-1 visa at the U.S. Consulate if your F-1 visa has expired or if you have been out of the United States for more than five months. Use the new I-20 we will send to you.

Step 6 – Upon return to the U.S. you must check-in to Slutzker Center to update your records.
