PREPARING TO EAT HEALTHY ON A BUDGET

You can eat healthy without spending a lot of money.

Just remember these tips:
. Use coupons and discount cards, and look for sales.
. Buy generic or store brands.
. Don't shop when you're hungry-you'll buy more and probably choose unhealthy foods!
. Make dishes that you can refrigerate or freeze for another meal.
. Avoid recipes with very expensive ingredients. Look for healthy recipes with low-cost ingredients like the ones in Eating Healthy: A Health Guide and Recipe Book for Students Living Off-Campus.

Some rules of thumb for food safety when shopping:

. Shop for foods that you shelve (can goods, breads, etc.) first.
. Buy refrigerated, frozen foods, and prepared foods last.
. Don't choose raw meats, poultry, or fish that are warm to the touch or have damaged packages.
. Check "sell-by" and "use-by" dates on foods-especially milk, yogurt cheese, and prepared foods.

REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE: TIPS TO ELIMINATE FIRE HAZARDS

Eliminate fire hazards in your apartment in order to minimize the risk of fire. Here are some tips recommended by the Syracuse Fire Fighters Association. You can have fun and be safe!

. Make sure there is a smoke detector in or near every sleeping area.
. Test your smoke detectors using the "test" button and install new batteries every semester.
. Smoke alarms shouldn't be painted and they shouldn't be more than 10 years old.
. Contact your landlord if you have concerns about the functioning of a smoke detector.
. If you have to plug multiple appliances into one outlet, use a power strip.
. Keep 36 inches of empty space between a space heater and everything else-space heaters need space!
. Never use an extension cord with a space heater.
. If you smoke, use large, deep ashtrays.
. Never put a cigarette butts directly in the trash-it can smolder, so completely soak cigarette butts with water before you throw them away.
. If you have a stovetop grease fire, turn off the burner and cover the pan with a lid to cut off oxygen to the fire. Never take a burning pan to the sink and NEVER use water on a grease fire.
