GROUNDHOG DAY: WHAT WILL PUNXSUTAWNEY PHIL'S SHADOW SAY?

Groundhog Day, February 2nd, marks the midway point between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox and celebrates traditional folklore that looks to the groundhog to predict the duration of the winter. Legend has it that if a groundhog comes out of its hole and does not see its shadow, then spring will arrive early; if the groundhog comes out and sees its shadow, it will run back into its hole scared and winter will persist for six more weeks.

Grand Groundhog Day celebrations with food, music, and merriment occur each year in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Spectators gather before sunrise and wait for the groundhog, "Punxsutawney Phil," to emerge from his hole to forecast our climatic fate.

SUPER BOWL XLI--INDIANAPOLIS COLTS VS. CHICAGO BEARS: FEB 4TH

Sunday, February 4, 6:25 pm on CBS

Superbowl Sunday, the day of the U.S. National Football League (NFL) championship game, is generally viewed as an unofficial holiday in the United States. It is a day when friends gather together dressed in their favorite team's jersey with potato chips in hand to witness a little piece of football (and advertising) history.

This year's Superbowl will be played in Miami on Sunday, February 4th. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:25 pm and will be televised on CBS. The Chicago Bears (15-4) will face off with the Indianapolis Colts (15-3). It is the Bear's first Super Bowl appearance since winning Super Bowl XX in 1986; it is the first time that the Colts have made it into the championship since Super Bowl V in 1971 when the Colts, then located in Baltimore, beat Dallas.

For those who are not football fanatics, the Superbowl viewing experience offers other attractions. With more than 1.5 million anticipated viewers watching the game, advertisers debut what are intended to be the best commercials of the year. It is not unlikely that much of the talk following the Superbowl will actually be about the best commercials, not the biggest plays of the game! Notable musical performances also lure viewers with Billy Joel singing the National Anthem this year and Prince taking the stage for the half-time show. If your interest is still not piqued, there is always food. Superbowl festivities tend to focus on a smorgasbord of American snack food classics including pizza, chili, chips, and dips--so be prepared to indulge.

SUPERBOWL GUACAMOLE RECIPE

3 ripe avocados, halved, seeded, and peeled
1 lime, juiced
½ teaspoon cumin
1 tablespoon cilantro, chopped
¼-½ medium onion, diced
1 roma tomato, diced
Salt and cayenne pepper to taste

Cut the peeled and seeded avocado into chunks and mash with a fork. Add half of the lime juice to coat the avocado mash. Add the cumin, cilantro, onion, and tomato. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt, cayenne pepper, and the remaining lime juice. Continue mashing mixture until you reach desired consistency.

Serve with tortilla chips and enjoy!

PERSONAL SAFETY AND TRAVELING DURING SPRING BREAK

A message from Off-Campus Student Services--
  • When making travel plans, use a reputable travel agency.
  • Learn as much as you can about your destination before traveling there.
  • If you are driving, select the safest routes, using current maps and travel information.
  • Choose reputable hotels and motels (recommended by travel agency or auto club, etc.)
  • Pack wisely. Being overburdened with luggage makes you more of a target.
  • Avoid packing valuables or items you cannot afford to replace or have stolen.
  • Never leave luggage unattended.
  • Dress wisely (avoid looking like a tourist).
  • Leave a complete travel schedule with a trusted family member of friend (where and when you will be at a location and how you can be reached).
  • Leave copies of driver's license, passport, and credit cards with a trusted friend or family member, in case of loss.
