The staff of the Slutzker Center for International Services sadly bids "farewell" to Rika McKenna, who is leaving Syracuse after four years of work in international education at the SCIS. Rika joined us in 2003 as an advisor to International Students and Scholars, and in 2006 was promoted to the new position of assistant director for compliance in the office. She served as advisor to the Japanese Student Association and was a member of Phi Beta Delta, the International Honorary Society for International Scholars, and the International Center of Syracuse. Rika's husband, David, relocated to Pennsylvania in early 2007, and Rika is moving to join him there, together with their children, Thomas and Misa. She plans to continue work on her second Master's degree in Information Management and will do an internship upon settling into her new home. We will miss her very much!!! Please send her an email or drop by before Friday to say "good-bye" and wish her well in her new life in Pennsylvania.

IMMIGRATION FILING FEES (INCLUDING OPT) TO INCREASE ON
JULY 30, 2007

New Application and Petition Fees Go Into Effect on July 30, 2007

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) reminds its customers that the agency’s new fee schedule is effective on July 30, 2007. Applications or petitions postmarked or otherwise filed on or after that date must include the new fee.

USCIS announced the new fee schedule last month following a comprehensive review of nearly 4,000 public comments. Under the new schedule, application and petition fees will increase, on average, about 66 percent. Still, the schedule does include benefits for some families with children and also expands the availability of fee waivers and exemptions.

For more information concerning the final fee rule, please visit USCIS  website at www.uscis.gov/21stCenturyService.

A few of the fee increases appear below:
I-765 (EAD cards for OPT)  $340
I-129 (H1B)  $320
I-140 (employer sponsored PR) $475
I-485 (PR application) $930
I-539 (change of status) $300

A complete listing of fees is available online at: http://www.uscis.gov/files/nativedocuments/FinalUSCISFeeSchedule052907.pdf

I-20/DS-2019 EXTENSION ELIGIBILITY: UPDATED EXTENSION FORM ON SCIS WEBSITE

Eligibility for a Program of Study Extension
Immigration regulations limit the circumstances for which international students may be granted a program extension. Federal Immigration regulations provide that you may be eligible for an extension if: (1) you have continually maintained full-time F-1/J-1 status AND (2) if you have compelling academic or medical reasons which resulted in a delay in your program completion. 8 CFR sec. 214.2(f)(7)(iii).

Examples of acceptable/compelling reasons for program extension are:

  • Changes in major/research topic;
  • Unexpected research difficulties;
  • Lost credits upon transfer into Syracuse University; or
  • Documented illness.

Additional information about requesting a program of study including an updated extension form is available on the Slutzker Center website: http://international.syr.edu/extension_stay.htm

PEER ASSISTANTS NEEDED TO HELP INCOMING INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

The Slutzker Center for International Services is currently accepting Peer Assistant volunteer applications for the Summer and Fall 2007 semesters. Peer Assistants' key responsibilities include assisting new international students with the initial clearance process, answering questions about housing, and helping new students adjust to the college environment and life in Syracuse.

In addition to giving back to the University community, being a Peer Assistant provides a great opportunity to meet new international students, share your experiences, build your resume, and form new friendships.

If you are interested in becoming a peer mentor, please contact Amanda Dunyk at lescis@syr.edu
