Fire Prevention Tips
Eliminate fire hazards in your apartment in order to minimize the risk of fire. Here are some tips recommended by the Syracuse Fire Fighters Association.
- Make sure there is a smoke detector in or near every sleeping area. Test your smoke detectors using the “test” button and install new batteries every semester.
- Smoke alarms should not be painted and they should not be more than 10 years old. Contact your landlord if you have concerns about the functioning of a smoke detector.
- If you have to plug multiple appliances into one outlet, use a power strip.
- Keep 36 inches of empty space between a space heater and everything else—space heaters need space! Never use an extension cord with a space heater.
- If you smoke, use large, deep ashtrays. Cigarette butts can smolder in the trash, so completely soak cigarette butts with water before you throw them away.
- If you have a stovetop grease fire, turn off the burner and cover the pan with a lid to cut off oxygen to the fire. Never take a burning pan to the sink and NEVER use water on a grease fire.
