Memorial Service for Dr. Weixing Cai – Sept 12
Friends and colleagues of Weixing Cai are welcome to pay their respects at a memorial service to be held in Hendricks Chapel on Friday, September 12, 2008 at 4 p.m. Weixing Cai, 28, a Ph.D. candidate in mathematics in Syracuse University's College of Arts and Sciences, died died on July 28, 2008 from injuries sustained as a result of an accidental fall.
Weixing came from Chaozhou, China and arrived at SU in July 2003. After finishing his requirements for a Ph.D. in statistics earlier in July 2008, Weixing had accepted an assistant professor appointment with the math department of the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, which was to have started this fall semester. Cai is survived by his wife, Yanna Ding, as well as his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jin Yao Cai. This memorial service is hosted by the Department of Mathematics and all who knew Weixing and anyone who wishes to show their respects are most welcome to attend.

Syracuse University and SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry students have an opportunity to enter online in a lottery for 144 free tickets to the premiere of "The Express" on Friday, Sept. 12, at 7:30 p.m. at the historic Landmark Theatre in downtown Syracuse. Registration for the free ticket drawing is open through 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7, at http://erniedavis.syr.edu. Winners will be picked at random and will be contacted by e-mail for ticket distribution information. Students may register one time only for their chance to be part of Syracuse's Hollywood-style premiere of "The Express." "It has always been our intention for our students to be able to participate in the movie premiere," says SU Associate Vice President for Institutional Advancement Charles Merrihew, a principal organizer of the premiere. "We are pleased that in fact this participation could be offered at no cost to some of our students." Recounting the life and legacy of SU football great Ernie Davis-the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy-the film stars Rob Brown as Davis and Dennis Quaid as Coach Ben Schwartzwalder. Brown, Quaid and other members of the cast-along with Director Gary Fleder and SU football legends Jim Brown, Floyd Little, Art Monk and Don McPherson, and some 40 members of the 1959 national championship team-will be in Syracuse for the premiere festivities. "The Express" opens in theaters nationwide about a month after the premiere, on Oct. 10.

SU's Pulse Performing Arts Series 2008-09 Schedule
The 2008-09 season of Syracuse University's Pulse performing arts series features a selection of free events in addition to ticketed concerts by nationally recognized performers. Season highlights include an SU Family Weekend concert by pop-a cappella musical group Rockapella ("Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?"), a Black History Month performance by Rochester-based dance company Garth Fagan Dance, and a Women's History Month concert by Tony Award-winning actress and singer Idina Menzel (Broadway's "Wicked"). Ticket prices for Pulse performances (with the exception of free events and Family Weekend promotions) are $5 for students with valid SU I.D.; $15 for SU faculty, staff, alumni and Pulse partners; and $20 for the general public. Hasan Abdullah Yabroudi Student Paper Award 2009
During the 2008-09 academic year the Middle Eastern Studies Program will continue its tradition of holding an annual essay contest for undergraduate and graduate students.
The Hasan Abdullah Yabroudi Prize will be awarded to the best two essays dealing with any aspect of the Middle East written by one undergraduate and one graduate student enrolled at Syracuse University. The authors of the winning papers will be presented with a certificate and a $500 stipend.
The entries, which can originate as course papers, will be evaluated by a faculty committee on the basis of originality of research and conceptualization, cogency of argument and clarity of writing. The essays must not exceed 7500 words (including bibliography) and must have been produced between August 25, 2008 and April 1, 2009. Essays can be nominated by the faculty or by students (with a letter of support from a faculty member). Please send 3 copies to the Yabroudi Prize Contest, Middle Eastern Studies Program, 332 Eggers Hall.
