Students in F-1 status who will be graduating in December and plan to apply for optional practical training (OPT) post graduation are reminded that it can take as long as three months to obtain their Employment Authorization Document (EAD card) from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Service Center.
If you plan to begin employment as of January 2009, you should be submitting your paperwork as soon as possible.
Begin by attending an OPT Seminar, held every first and third Wednesday of the month, at the Slutzker Center for International Services. Download all OPT application material from the Web site and then set up an appointment to drop-off your application.
Employment cannot begin until you receive your EAD card.
How Do You See America?
More often than not our beliefs about foreign nations are based on their portrayal in popular media and accounts of our compatriots who have visited those countries. Based on firsthand experience, your opinions of the United States might either have changed or strengthened since you’ve arrived here.
Together with Professor Dennis Kinsey, the director of Public Diplomacy Program at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, doctoral student Olga Zatepilina is conducting a study to explore the effects of visual communication in the formation of people's attitudes, perceptions, and opinions of a foreign country.
Their research team is looking for volunteers from across the SU and SUNY ESF campuses to participate in the research. The participants will join a 20-minute session to rank-order a set of photos depicting America. If you are an international student interested in participating, please email Olga Zatepilina at ozatepil@syr.edu. Results of the study will be published in an upcoming issue of SCISNEWS.
Begin Appartment Hunting Soon!!
While it may seem as though you’ve just gotten settled and finalized your fall housing accommodations, if you are living off campus or plan to live off campus, the months of September and October are when students start looking for housing for the following academic year.
There are a number of rental units available in the University area. Apartment listings can be found in local newspapers as well as in the Daily Orange. A place to start your search may be Orange Housing. This local company is not affiliated with Syracuse University or SUNY ESF but maintains a Web site of apartment offerings in the University neighborhood. The Web site also offers roommate searches, sublet listings, and a number of information services relevant to those looking for apartments.
One of the best sources for advice and information about off-campus housing may be your friends and classmates. Ask them about the pros and cons of living off campus and where to live. If you find a place you like, ask the current tenants if they are happy with the location. As a prospective tenant, you have the right to ask the landlord questions. Before signing a lease, be sure that you are satisfied with the apartment, services provided by the landlord, and the security of the unit.
For further information about visit the Office of Orientation and Off-campus Programs situated at 754 Ostrom Avenue or visit their Web site. You may also contact them at 443-1012 or email at oocp@syr.edu.
